Mount Teide tour: the seven daytime listings, hour by hour

Almost every long Mount Teide tour follows the same shape, and once you see it the listings stop looking interchangeable. The morning belongs to the park: the road climbs out of the resorts, through pine forest, and comes out on the floor of the Las Cañadas caldera, which is flat, enormous and completely unlike anywhere else on the island. Stops happen at the viewpoints, and Roques de García is the one everybody photographs.

The afternoon is where the listings separate. Some drop down the north side to Icod de los Vinos, where the dragon tree is, and Garachico on the coast, and then up into the Masca Valley. Some turn round and bring you home. The first kind is eight or nine hours; the second is four.

What none of them do is take you to the crater. The cable car climbs to an upper station at 3,555 m, the summit is 3,715 m, and the last stretch requires a permit arranged in advance with a limited number of places. It is worth saying plainly because the phrase «up Teide» means the upper station in every listing here, and that is still high above the cloud layer and worth the journey.

One listing includes the cable car tickets in its fare: $105, seven hours with hotel pickup. On the others, whether you ride up is your own arrangement, and the listing page is the place to check rather than this one.

$68 — our pick. Eight hours, rated 4.5 across 1,906 reviews, with pickup from the south. The operator names the volcanic landscapes and the dramatic viewpoints of the park, then Icod, Garachico and Masca. It is the straightforward version of this day, with the deepest review record of the long listings.

$66 — nine hours, rated 4.6 across 2,988 reviews. The same four places, an hour longer, and the second-largest review count on this site after the cable car day. If your priority is the villages as much as the mountain, this is the listing that treats them as equals.

$65 — nine and a half hours, rated 4.5 across 440 reviews. The longest day here and, at the same time, the lowest fare of the full days. The operator leads with the Dragon Tree at Icod, historic Garachico and the Masca Valley. Long days suit some people and exhaust others; nine and a half hours is a real commitment.

$98 — eight hours, rated 4.7 across 757 reviews. The highest-rated daytime listing on this site, in a 4WD vehicle, starting from Puerto de la Cruz rather than the southern resorts. The operator promises hidden places in the park rather than a longer list of stops, which is a different kind of day from the coach routes.

The caldera floor. Las Cañadas is the wide, flat basin the road comes out onto, ringed by a wall of rock, and the scale of it is the thing photographs never quite manage. Every daytime listing on this site crosses it. It is also where the coaches stop, so the first ten minutes out of the vehicle are usually the busiest of the day and the next ten are not.

Roques de García. The rock formations standing on the caldera floor with the cone behind them, and the most photographed view in the park. It is on the route of $80 by name, and in practice on most of the others too.

The Pico Viejo lava field. Named in the description of $80 and visible from the road: an expanse of old, dark, broken ground that reads as lunar rather than volcanic until somebody explains what you are looking at. This is the part of the day where having a guide earns its money.

Vilaflor. The village on the way up through the pine forest, which the operator of $78 calls the highest in the country. Most of the southern routes pass through it, and the change in vegetation between the coast and the treeline happens along that stretch of road.

The cable car station. Whether you stop there depends on the listing. $105 is built around it; on the guided full days, the park is the subject and the ride up is not usually part of the itinerary.

Layers, not optimism. It is considerably colder up there than at the coast, and the air is thin enough to notice when you walk. People step off an air-conditioned coach in shorts and regret it within minutes. Every listing here runs whatever the weather does, and the weather at 2,000 m is not the weather at your hotel.

Pickup areas. Most of the long listings include hotel pickup and name the areas they cover on their own listing page. That is the detail worth checking before booking rather than after: $98 starts from Puerto de la Cruz, $78 from Playa de las Américas, and the rest from the southern resorts generally.

Hours in a seat. An eight-hour Mount Teide tour is not eight hours of mountain. A good part of it is road, and the road is the point on the Masca stretch, where the views out of the window are half the reason the route exists. If sitting still is the problem, the four-hour or the 4WD listings are the answer.

The summit, again. If standing on the crater rim is genuinely what you came for, that is a separate errand: a permit, booked ahead, with limited places. It is not inside any Mount Teide tour on this site, and the honest thing to do is arrange it first and build the rest of the trip around it.
