Tenerife Teide sunset: the evening half of the mountain, and the 9 trips that sell it

The drive up is part of it. You leave the coast in ordinary afternoon light, climb through the pine forest, and somewhere around 2,000 m the trees stop and the light changes: harder, thinner, with the shadows getting longer across black and red ground. By the time the group stops at a viewpoint, the cone of Teide is catching the last of the sun on one side while the plain below it has already gone into shade.

The cloud is the point. Most days there is a layer of cloud sitting over the island at a few hundred metres, which is what makes the coast grey at six in the evening. From the park you are above it. For the sky itself: $40 or $74. Both 4.9. The first is two hours and small-group, at your own pace; the second is three hours around the largest private telescope in the Canary Islands with astrophotography included. Neither is built around the light going down, so book them for what they are.

The long version: $102. Nine hours, sunset in the park, dinner, and a guide working the night sky with laser pointers and telescopes. It is the most expensive evening here and the only one that is also a full day out.

«Sunset Tenerife today». Usually somebody checking the clock rather than booking anything, because the time the light goes moves by nearly two hours across the year.
