Teide volcano Tenerife: the mountain itself, the summit question, and how long it takes

It helps to picture the shape before you pick a ticket. The island rises steadily from the coast through banana country and then pine forest, and at around 2,000 m the trees stop and you come out onto a wide, flat, open floor. That floor is the caldera of Las Cañadas, and out of the middle of it rises the cone. From down on the coast the mountain reads as a grey-blue triangle behind the hotels. From the caldera floor it reads as what it is: a separate mountain standing on a plain that is already higher than most of the hills in Britain.

Two peaks, not one. The main cone is Teide. Beside it, slightly lower, is Pico Viejo, whose crater and lava field make up the great sweep of black and ochre ground on the south-west side. What you can actually reach. The road brings a coach to around 2,200 m. The cable car lifts you to 3,555 m in a few minutes. A note on coaches. Several of these are run in a coach, and a Mount Teide bus tour is exactly what the long island days are. That is not a criticism — the road up is steep, narrow in places and full of switchbacks, and being driven is a far better way to see it than driving.
