Teide tour: five different days sold under one name

Almost everybody arrives at this decision the same way: they search for a Teide tour, see twenty results, and assume the expensive ones are simply the better ones. They are not. They are different products that happen to share a mountain.

The cable car day. A vehicle collects you, drives you up into the park, and the fare includes round-trip tickets for the ride to the upper station — the only listing here that names those tickets in its description.

The long guided day. Seven to nine and a half hours, hotel pickup, a guide and a route that takes in the caldera and then drops down the far side to Icod de los Vinos, Garachico and the Masca Valley. You see the most this way, and you spend the most hours sitting down. The short run from the south is the opposite: four hours, no villages, straight up to the caldera floor and back. The 4WD day reaches the same park on tracks a coach cannot use, in a vehicle that holds a handful of people rather than fifty.

The evening. Sunset from above the cloud layer, then telescopes. The park sits under one of the clearest skies in Europe, which is why there is an observatory on the slope and why more than a third of the listings here only start once everybody else is going home.

This is the single fact that changes bookings. The cable car climbs to La Rambleta, the upper station at 3,555 m. The summit of Teide is 3,715 m. Those last metres are a separate matter entirely: walking the final stretch to the crater rim requires a permit, it has to be arranged ahead of time, and the number of places each day is limited.

So somebody who searches for a Teide summit tour and books a cable car ticket has bought a genuinely spectacular thing — the upper station, the views out over the island and the cloud layer, the trails that lead away from it — but not the crater. Nobody is hiding this; it is simply not the first thing a listing page tells you.

The same goes for the German wording of that search, which turns up on this site more often than the English one. The answer is identical. The permit is its own errand, booked separately and in advance, and it is not included in any of the twenty listings compared here. What those listings do is put you on the mountain, and the upper station is as high as a ticket alone will take you.

$68 — the eight-hour day. Rated 4.5 across 1,906 reviews, with pickup from the south: the park, then Icod de los Vinos, Garachico and Masca. If one half of your group wants the mountain and the other wants villages and a dragon tree, this is the compromise.

$66 — nine hours, four places. Rated 4.6 across 2,988 reviews, the second-deepest record here. A Teide Masca tour in the literal sense: the park, Masca, Icod de los Vinos and Garachico in one guided day.

$98 — from Puerto de la Cruz, in a 4WD. Eight hours, rated 4.7 across 757 reviews, the highest rating of any full day here. If you are staying on the north coast and looking for a Teide tour Puerto de la Cruz departure rather than a southern one, this is the listing that starts on your side of the island. The longest day here is $65 at nine and a half hours, rated 4.5 across 440 reviews, anchored on the Dragon Tree at Icod and the Masca Valley.

$78 — the open 4WD from Playa de las Américas. Seven hours, rated 4.6 across 1,175 reviews. The operator calls Vilaflor the country’s highest village and puts it on the route alongside Masca: a Teide and Masca tour with the roof off.

By late afternoon the coach parks empty and a different set of vehicles comes up. The sky over this park is one of the clearest in Europe, which is not marketing: it is why an observatory was built on the slope in the first place. Seven of the twenty listings here exist entirely because of it.

The evenings come in three shapes. The short session is the sky and a telescope and nothing else — $40 for two hours at 4.9, or $40 for three at 4.7 across 3,627 reviews.
